Ever wonder where the Spiritual Left is when you need them? Take the time to read the Cleu book so that you know you are not alone, and that your spiritual identity is shared by many others. Stand up for your vision, and then start a circle of people who share your spiritual values. You are the clue! Wouldn’t it be amazing if progressives claimed their spiritual identity, developed spiritual community, and worked together to create a world based on their spiritual values? Can we do it? Yes, we can.

As the U.S. presidential election draws near, we can see the power of churches organizing at the grassroots level. That power is increasingly dominated by the Religious Right, people whose faith-based views lead them to seek legislation against such things as abortion or same-sex marriage. Intellectual or factual arguments make little impact compared to the emotional appeal of strongly-held beliefs. We need a radically different approach to promote more pro-choice positions– it is time to stand up for our own spiritual values.

According to Michael Lerner, “…the political Left doesn’t really have a clue about the spiritual crisis in American society and is thus unable to address it in any persuasive way.” His book, The Left Hand of God challenges the political Left to give up its deeply held fear of religion and to recognize the spiritual need for meaning that has driven so many ordinary people to fundamentalist churches and to vote against their economic self-interest because of their religious values.

Think about it. Religion means uniting with others through ties that bind its people as one. Either we go on saying that our spirituality is unique, or we find the mystic unity that is truly ours. Are you ready to claim your spiritual identity, find and develop your spiritual community, and be the change you wish to see in the world? The Conscious Life Ecumenical Union is here to help. Together, we are the clue!
